De winnaar van de Booktrust Teenage Fiction Award is bekendgemaakt. De prijs gaat naar Gregory Hughes met Unhooking the Moon.
Debuut
De Booktrust Teenage Fiction Award is in 2003 in het leven geroepen en is bedoeld als prijs voor het beste Britse jeugdboek. Eerdere winnaars waren onder meer Mark Haddon met The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2003), Anne Cassidy met Looking for JJ (2004) en Neil Gaiman met The Graveyard Book (2009). Dit jaar gaat de prijs dus naar Gregory Hughes met zijn debuut Unhooking the Moon . Het boek over twee wezen die een avontuurlijke road trip naar New York maken is (nog) niet in het Nederlands verschenen.
Argumenten
De jury verantwoordt haar keuze als volgt: “All of us felt that Unhooking the Moon stood out from the beginning of our discussions. As a writer Gregory Hughes has a genuinely unique voice. Unhooking the Moon is original, poignant and funny and full of terrific characters and gripping storytelling, while also managing to explore the kind of themes teenagers will find engaging. It’s also a first novel, so Gregory’s achievement is all the more astonishing. I have no doubt that this debut marks the beginning of a great career.”
Andere genomineerden waren Charlie Higson, Zizou Corder, Sarra Manning, Jason Wallace en Marcus Sedgwick.
