Gratis boeken voor schoolkinderen worden afgeschaft, bibliotheken gesloten. Toch vindt de Britse regering dat kinderen van rond de elf jaar jaarlijks minstens 50 boeken moeten lezen. Belangrijke auteurs zullen daarbij een adviserende taak krijgen.
Kwaliteit, geen kwantiteit
Het plan van education secretary Michael Gove maakt in Engeland veel reacties los. Nadat hij deze week zei dat scholen de lat hoger moeten leggen, stellen velen zich vragen. Hoe denkt de regering dit te faciliteren? En welke 50 boeken zouden dat dan moeten zijn?
Children´s Laureate Anthony Brown reageert: ‘It´s always good to hear that the importance of children´s reading is recognised – but rather than setting an arbitrary number of books that children ought to read, I feel it´s the quality of children´s reading experiences that really matter. (…) Pleasure, engagement and enjoyment of books is what counts – not simply meeting targets.’
Zoveel mogelijk rommel
‘I´m all in favour of children reading books, of course, the more the merrier. What I´m wary of is that people will start saying that quality is more important than quantity’, countert collega Philip Pullman. ‘When it comes to reading books, children should be allowed – and encouraged – to read as much rubbish as they want to. But that can only happen when there are plenty of good books as well as rubbish all around them. Where are they going to get these 50 books a year from?’
Miranda McKearney van the Reading Agency zegt: ‘So often the discussion about how to inspire children to read focuses just on schools, but libraries, and families, have a key role to play. We won´t crack the problems unless we build a more systemic approach.’
Het plan van Gove kwam er nadat bleek dat Britse tieners van de 17de naar de 25ste plaats zakken in een internationale ranglijst voor leesstandaarden. Er is duidelijk nog werk aan de winkel.
