De prestigieuze Britse boekenprijzen zijn uitgereikt. Neil Gaiman krijgt de Carnegie Medal, Freya Blackwood de Kate Greenaway Medal.
Het kerkhof van Neil Gaiman
Met The Graveyard Book (Bloomsbury) (Ned. vert.: Het kerkhof; Luitingh) wint Neil Gaiman de Carnegie Medal 2010, de bekende Britse kinderboekenprijs waarvan vandaag de winnaars zijn bekendgemaakt. ´The Graveyard Book has already won the 2009 Newbery Medal, the prestigious US equivalent of the Carnegie, making Neil Gaiman the first author to complete the ´double´ being awarded both these internationally recognised prizes for children´s fiction for the same book ensuring his place in literary history’, klinkt het bij de organisatie. Harry & Hopper van Margaret Wild
De Kate Greenaway Medal 2009 voor de beste Britse kinderboekenillustraties gaat naar Freya Blackwood, voor haar tekeningen in Harry & Hopper (Scholastic) van Margaret Wild. ‘In Harry & Hopper, Freya Blackwood excels in her use of muted colour, perspective, and exterior and interior space to give a powerful take on the father-son relationship, and a much-loved pet´s death. A sensitive issue for young children is beautifully handled, with Harry´s emotions and memories of Hopper expressed visually to great effect’, zegt de jury. De andere genomineerden waren:
